Description:
“The view of downtown Hartford focused on the newest building in town: the tower of the Travelers Insurance Company. Completed in 1919, the impressive granite and steel structure became the tallest building in New England. Piercing the sky, the tower symbolized the company’s growth over the decades, which mirrored that of the city. While much has changed in the hundred years since this was painted - note the trolleys and old fashioned cars - the tower remains the anchor of the city skyline.
McManus was one of Connecticut’s best known artists at the time. He lived and worked in Hartford and often walked the city looking for inspiration, wearing his black suit, custom bowtie, and large brimmed black hat.”
